Herbert ‘Kenneth’ Lindamood



Herbert “Kenneth” Lindamood, 82, of Hoffman Avenue in Morgantown, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at home, after a lengthy illness.
    He was born July 31, 1922, in P a r k e r s b u r g , W.Va., a son of the late Charles Herbert and Bertha Alice Steed Lindamood.
    He was a member of the Spruce Street United Methodist Church in Morgantown.
    Kenneth was a Life Underwriter with the Prudential Life Insurance Co. and retired after 36 years of service in 1982.
    He was a member of the Morgantown Masonic Union Lodge No. 4 AF&AM, VFW Post 548 of Morgantown and the United Commercial Travelers.
    A veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was active in the Wrestling Program at the local and state level as well as WVU as a scorekeeper. He was inducted into the WVU Wrestling Hall of Fame.
    Kenneth was a state observer for the Mt. Board of High School Officials. He is one of the original Board Members of the Monongalia Emergency Board. He was Chairman of the Morgantown City Planning Committee and was past president and past secretary of the Morgantown Touchdown Club where he received the Curbstone Coach Award.
    He is survived by his wife, Frances Lenora Pratt Lindamood; one son, Gary Charles and spouse, Judy Lindamood, and daughter-inlaw, Robyn Lindamood, all of Morgantown; two sisters-in-law, Jessie Lindamood of Parkersburg, W.Va., Wilda Smith of California; and one brother-in-law, James Paxton of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Lisa Matthews and spouse, Rob, Kenneth R. and Lurena Lindamood, Nikki Lindamood, all of Morgantown, and Rebecca Lindamood of Charlotte, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his son, Alan Kenneth Lindamood on Jan. 28, 2005; three sisters, Alice Leora Paxton, Edna Kathryn Sams and Bertha Ione Knapp; two brothers, Richard Lindamood and Charles Franklin Lindamood.
    Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St, Morgantown on Saturday, June 18 from 4-8 p.m. and Sunday, June 19, from noon until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m., at the funeral home with Pastors Keith and Ruth Simmons officiating.
    Burial will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery.
    The Morgantown Masonic Lodge No. 4 AF&AM will provide Masonic Rites at the cemetery.

James Marshall Sams
    James Marshall Sams, 93, of Heritage Point, formerly of Callen Avenue, Morgantown, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Madison Rehab and Nursing Center.
    He was born February 16, 1912 in Monongalia County, W.Va., a son of the late John Wesley and Emma Kisner Sams.
    He had been employed as a coal miner; served as shop foreman for Galis Electric and later retired from Preston County Power and Light Company.
    James was a member of the Spruce Street United Methodist Church, a former member of the Shriner’s, a 50-year member of the Eastern Star Chapter #35, life member of the W.Va. Scottish Rites, 33rd Degree Mason and a member of the Morgantown Union Lodge #4.
    Mr. Sams is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
    He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Linda and E. Louis Murphy of Princeton, W.Va.; Sandra and Arthur Wayne George of Kingwood, W.Va.; two grandchildren and spouses, Arthur Shawn and Christy George of Palm Coast, Fla. and Kimberly and Michael Warnick of Kingwood, W.Va.; three great-grandchildren, McKenna Ruth Warnick, Madeline Sophia Warnick, of Kingwood, W.Va. and Catelyn Ruth George, of Palm Coast, Fla.; and nieces, Helen Louise League and Judy Sams.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth G. Sams, three brothers and one sister.
    Family and friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, from 4-7 p.m. Monday, May 16, and from 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. with Dr. Stacy L. Groscup officiating.

Alan Kenneth Lindamood

    Alan Kenneth Lindamood, 54 of Westover and formerly of Grafton Road, Morgantown, died on Friday, January 28, 2005, at Monongalia General Hospital, following a brief illness.

    On Sunday, January 30, the body will be moved and lie in state at the Spruce Street United Methodist Church from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. funeral service, conducted by Rev. K. Almond.

Burial will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery.

Russell Franklin Lemmon Jr.

Russell Franklin Lemmon Jr., 82, of Takoma Street, Morgantown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Monongalia General Hospital.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1922, in Morgantown, W.Va., the son of the late Russell F. and Edith M. Ashburn Lemmon.

He was a longtime member of Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus, where he served as an usher for 22 years.

He was a 1941 graduate of Morgantown High School.

He was a welder and pipefitter and a member of the Local Union 152 Steamfitters and Pipefitters, holding the office of Financial Secretary for 42 years.

Russell was also a 32nd Degree Mason and was known by his friends as a man of integrity.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathleen Miller Lemmon; two sons and spouses, Douglas and Deborah Lemmon and their son, Stephen, of Morgantown, and Gary and Cheryl Lemmon and their daughter, Kayla, of Purcellville, Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Eldred and Jo Ann Lybargar.

Family and friends will be received from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown.

The body will be moved and lie in state from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, conducted by the Rev. M. Steven Meadows at Suncrest United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in East Oak Grove Cemetery.

The Masonic Lodge 4 will conduct graveside services at the cemetery.

Harry James Vaughn Jr.

Milford, Ohio


Harry James "Jim" Vaughn Jr., 57, of Milford, Ohio, and Wanatah, Ind., died May 13, 2004.

Jim was a Superintendent for Graycor, in Homewood, Ill., and prior to that, for Hunt Construction Company in Indianapolis, Ind., for 25 years. He was a Mason 32nd Degree York Rite, Ind., and was a member of Masonic Lodge #4 of Morgantown, W.Va. He was also a U.S. Naval Seabees Reserve.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 17, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Craver-Riggs Funeral Home & Crematory in Milford, Ohio. Graveside services with military honors will be Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Rocky Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 310-B Bennett Center Drive, Greer, SC 29650; or to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Drive, Greenville, SC 29615.

Attorney Russell I. Jenkins, 74, of Uniontown, Pa., died Saturday, May 8, 2004.

Friends will be received in the BARNETT-SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 196 West Main Street, Uniontown, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 12, with the Rev. William Rodahaver officiating.

Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Presbyterian Cemetery. Full graveside military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 47 of Uniontown, Pa. Masonic Laurel Lodge No. 651 of Uniontown, Pa., will hold a service this evening at 7:30 p.m., in the funeral home.

Arthur Dale Randolph

Arthur Dale Randolph, 96, of Summers School Road, formerly of Stockett Road, Morgantown, passed away Friday, April 9, 2004 peacefully at home.

He was born August 30, 1907, in Lost Creek, W.Va., a son of Scott F. and Mary Della Rowand Randolph. He came to Morgantown in 1932 to attend West Virginia University. He had been manager of Hagan's Ice Cream Stores, before joining the Navy in 1943 and serving during World War II on the USS Sierra.

He returned to Morgantown and worked again with Hagan's Ice Cream Stores while building his home in Cheat Lake. He left Hagan's in 1957 to own and operate Randolph's Restaurant on Walnut Street for 15 years before selling it in 1973. He then became bookkeeper for Brock Reed and Wade Estates until he retired at age 80.

He then spent his time enjoying his woodworking. He joined the Morgantown Union Lodge 4, Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons in March 1950. He went on to obtain the 32nd degree in the Masonic Lodge. He was a self taught man of vast knowledge and he enjoyed s haring this with his family. He wrote poetry and had great respect for classical music.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mary Katheryn Zinn Weese Randolph; one daughter, Nancy Bennett, of Columbus, Ohio; one son Michael Randolph and wife, Anne, of Virginia Beach; one brother, Herb Randolph and wife, Jeanne, of Granville, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Daisy Randolph, of Huntington, W.Va.; and sister-in-law, Sue Randolph, of New Jersey; step-children, Raymond Weese, and wife, Janet, Diana Livengood and husband, Harry, Boyd Weese Jr., and wife, Irene, all of Morgantown; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn Marie Meyers Randolph in 1942; their son, Richard Dale Randolph; three brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m, the time of service, on Monday, April 12, with the Rev. Elizabeth Baker and Dr. Stacy L. Groscup officiating. Burial will follow in the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens. Morgantown Union Lodge 4, AF & AM will conduct Masonic Rites at the cemetery on Monday.

 

William 'Bill' Weaver

William "Bill" Weaver, 74, of Globe Avenue, Morgantown, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at his home.

He was born March 24, 1930, in Fairmont, a son of the late William Park and Beuna Williams Weaver.

He was a retired Nationwide Insurance agent and was a Methodist by faith. William served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and was active in Veteran's Organizations. He served as Post Commander, Life Member and Manager of the Morgantown VFW Post 548, and was a member of the Elk's and Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Cheryl and Robert Travinski, of Morgantown, and Tara and Richard Prim, of Morgantown; four sons, William P. Weaver Jr., of Morgantown, Thomas M. Weaver, of Westover, Robert Jerome Weaver, of Morgantown, and Lonnie Russell Weaver, of Morgantown; two sisters, Katherine "Kitty" Marshall, of Westover, and Sherry Snider, of N.C.; grandchildren, Zachary Travinski, Robert and Teisha Prim, William P. Weaver III, Timothy Gibson Phillips, Michael Weaver, all of Morgantown, and Stephanie Weaver, of Tempe, Ariz.; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Jonathan Weaver and Kaden Michael Weaver, both of Morgantown.

His wife Anna Marie Ayers Weaver preceded him in death.

George Edward Fanok

George Edward Fanok, 73, of Dunkard Avenue, Westover, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Mon General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Jere, a son of the late Stephen and Catherine Fanok.

He owned and operated the Electric Equipment Company for over 20 years and was a Building Code Inspector for the city of Morgantown. He was a member of Riverside Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge No. 4, where he served two times as Past Master.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Fanok; one son and spouse, Jeffry Edward and Cynthia Fanok, of St. Albans; two sisters, Eva Harmon, of Maryland, and Mattie Holbert, of Wyoming; two brothers, Adam Fanok, of Florida, and Peter Fanok, of Westover; three grandchildren, Andrea Geier, Shawna Fanok and Eric Edward Fanok; three great-grandchildren, Leslie Brown, Samantha Fanok and Justin Edward Fanok; one sister-in-law, Vickie Fanok; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Adam Andrew Fanok; one sister, Stella Secrest; and one brother, Paul Fanok.

Funeral services will be held at McCulla's on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Judith Lively and the Rev. Mark Booth officiating. Morgantown Union Lodge 4 AF & AM will provide Masonic graveside services at Beverly Hills Cemetery at a l ater date. Cremation services will be provided by McCulla Funeral Home.

Robert L. 'Bob' West

Robert L. "Bob" West, 76, of Goshen Road, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at his home following a battle with thyroid cancer. He was born July 16, 1927, son of the late John H. and Maude Clark West.

Bob was a longtime public servant in law enforcement, first working as a policeman for the Monongahela Railroad and as a state conservation officer. He later served as a deputy under Sheriff Mike Gill and was a 20-year member of the Morgantown Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant.

Bob was a member of the Goshen Baptist Church, Morgantown Union Lodge No. 4 AF & AM, a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason, the Morgantown Commandery, No. 18 Knight's Templar and the Osiris Shrine. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. and a charter member of the Monongalia Detachment 342 Marine Corps. League.

He also enjoyed playing bass guitar with the Hill Topper's Band, the Kurilko Band and the Tempo's Band and also working on his farm.

He is survived by his son, Robert L. West Jr., at home; a sister and husband, Grace Esther and Robert Howard Neel, of Goshen Road; a brother-in-law and wife, William L. and Thelma Gibson Foor, of Morgantown; a special nephew, Casey Casteel, of Gum Springs Road; a dear friend, Zoe Romero, of Tom's Run Road; a good friend, Joe Bilotti, of Morgantown; a nephew, James C. West II, of the Goshen Road; a sister-in-law, Jean West Robertson, of Morgantown; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Susan JoAnn Foor West, in October 1996; three brothers, J.T. West, Bill West and James C. West; and two sisters, Rosellen W. Kinkaid and Ruth W. Timpano.

L. William 'Bill' Sterling

L. William "Bill" Sterling, age 68, of Morgantown, died Monday, November 10, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 28, 1935, in Kingwood, a son of the late Herbert Russell Sterling Sr. and Mary Minerva Elliot Sterling.

He was a 1953 graduate of Kingwood High School, attended Potomac State College and worked as a maintenance supervisor at the Fort Martin Power Station until his retirement. He was a veteran of the West Virginia Army Reserve National Guard located at Camp Dawson, a member of the Morgantown Lodge #4, A.F. & A.M., The Scottish Rite Bodies of Wheeling, the Wheeling Osiris Temple and a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2391 in Kingwood. He was a loving father, grandfather and Presbyterian b y faith.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley A. DeBerry Sterling, of Morgantown; one son and spouse, Michael Allen and Kelly Sterling, of Bruceton Mills; two daughters and spouses, Lisa Marie and Larry Liston, and Dina Kay and Mark Stiles, all of Bruceton Mills; three sisters, Mary Joretha Sterling Johnson, of Kingwood, Thera Jeanene Sterling Vincent, of Bridgeport, and Jacqueline Sterling Bucklew, of Malvern, Ark.; and six grandchildren, Mitchell and Matthew Liston, Jennifer and Marcus Stiles, and Shelby and Brady Sterling.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Russell Sterling Jr., and a sister, Sandy Sterling Garlitz.

Warren Edward Rice

Warren Edward Rice, 82, of Cassville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003. He was born in Bolair, Webster County, on Dec. 21, 1920, a son of the late Thomas and Viola Rice.

Warren was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosalie Ruth Rice; one daughter and spouse, Delores and Edward Ghuste, of Morgantown; one son and spouse, Glen and Trisha Rice, of Cassville; five grandchildren, Kimberly and Brian Mertz, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Christine and Jeff Whyte, of Inwood, Lisa and Charles Wright, of Morgantown, and Joshua and Cody Rice, of Cassville; seven great-grandchildren, Rachel Bean, Lauren Mertz, Brian Mertz Jr., Ryan Harrison, Joh* Whyte, Mikayla Wright and Ethan Wright; one great-great-grandchild, Jayden Mertz; four brothers and two sisters, Warden and JoAnn Rice and Dewain and Thelma Rice, all of Morgantown, Donald and Patsy Rice, Doy and Lou Ann Rice and Verline and Burton Coakley, all of Virginia, and Mable Stalnaker of Cowen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

He was a member of the Cassville Methodist Church at Cassville.

Warren served in the Army during World War II, in the South Pacific for three years. He was in the CC Camp at Webster County (Cranberry Division) as a teenager. He also worked at Dupont for over three years before entering the Army. He later worked at Cassville Mines for over 11 years after returning from the service. He then worked at Sterling Faucet for over 24 years when the mines shut down. When he retired from Sterling Faucet, he and his son began raising beef cattle on their family farm in Cassville. Warren loved the outdoors; he enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing with his son and grandsons, Joshua and Cody.

Warren was a member of the Disabled Veterans and the VFW Post 548. He was also a member of the Monongalia County Farm Bureau and of the Masonic Lodge 4 in Morgantown.

Friends may call at McCulla Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at McCulla's on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Beverly Hills Cemetery with full military graveside services being conducted by the Westover VFW Post 9916. Masonic graveside services will be conducted by the Morgantown Union Lodge 4 A.F. & A.M. "TAPS" will be performed by Luke Barber of the Westwood Middle School band.

      

John Thomas Coburn

John Thomas Coburn, age 49, of Macedonia, Ohio, passed away September 27, 2003, at University Hospital in Cleveland. Mr. Coburn was born in Harrisburg, Pa., February 20, 1954.

The family returned to Morgantown in 1955, where John graduated from Morgantown High School in 1972. John attended West Virginia University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in computer science. He attended graduate studies at West Virginia University toward a master's degree in computer science. After graduation from WVU, John worked as a senior programmer for the West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transportation System (PRT). During his employment with the PRT, he received extensive training at Boeing Corporation in Seattle, Wash. In 1981, John accepted the position of Associate Software Specialist with Digital Equipment Corporation in Charleston, W.Va. While working for Digital, John met his beloved wife, Wanda, and transferred to Digital in Cleveland, Ohio, in May of 1983. John and his wife, Wanda, were married on June 4, 1983, in Cleveland, Ohio. John, Wanda and son, Damon, lived in Macedonia, Ohio, and kept in contact with family and loved ones in Pa., W.Va. and Tenn.

John is a member of the United Methodist Church of Macedonia where he played on the softball team for many years. John was also a member of Patriotism Chapter Order of DeMolay where he was a past Master Councilor and a member of the Morgantown Union Lodge No. 4 A.F.& A.M. John is remembered by his wife and family as a man of faith and fun. He is known for his laid-back, easy going approach to life. He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Coburn is preceded in death by his parents Geraldine Ruth (nee Fullmer) and Clifford "Pete" Angus Coburn. John is survived by his wife, Wanda Sue Coburn (nee Busler); son, Damon James Christopher Calhoun; daughter-in-law, Dawn B. Calhoun (nee Glowacki); and grandson, Elijah Josiah Daniel Calhoun. He is also survived by sister, Valeria Sappington brother-in-law, Douglas Sappington; and their two children, Kyle and Kristen Sappington; his brother, William "Bill" Coburn and sister-in-law, Claudia Salandra Coburn; and their three children, Teresa, Jennifer and Christine Salandra; and brother, Clifford Coburn; and sister-in-law, Ione Coburn; sister-in-law, Rhonda Kay Weiss brother-in-law, Thomas Weiss and their two children, John Paul Jones and Danielle Weiss; and great niece, Autumn Jones; sister-in-law, Donna Dooley and brother-in-law, Bob Dooley and their daughter, Sarah Dooley; sister-in-law, Ruby "Sugar" Lesko and brother-in-law, Terry Lesko; and many other beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.

Arthur F. Coburn

Arthur F. Coburn, age 73, of Weirton, passed away on Aug. 26, 2003, at Wyngate, Weirton.

He was born on April 12, 1930, in Morgantown, the beloved son of the late William and Pearl Coburn, and Raymond and Frona Coburn.

Art served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-55, and was a 1959 graduate of WVU. He retired from Weirton Steel Corp. after 32 years of service. He was a 50-year member of Morgantown A.F. & A.M. Lodge 4; and Osiris Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., of Wheeling.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Robe Coburn; his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur F. "Buck" Coburn II and Barbara A. Fickes Coburn, of Weirton; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda Rae Coburn Moore and Anthony C. Moore, of Clemmons, N.C.

Also surviving are three grandchildren, Tara L. Coburn, of Kettering, Ohio, Adam F. Coburn, of Weirton, and Heather R. Moore Simpson, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five sisters, Mrs. June Zanotti, Mrs. Elsie Hill and Mrs. Helen Goodwin, all of Morgantown, Mrs. Virginia Jones, of Florida, and Mrs. Nancy Yoke, of Reedsville.

His sister, Mrs. Lena Snider, and two brothers, W. Carl Coburn and Clifford "Pete" Coburn preceded him in death.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Stacy Groscup officiating at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Morgantown, where interment will follow.

Harry Jarvis 'Jarvie' Eldred II

Harry Jarvis "Jarvie" Eldred II, 79, of South Park, Morgantown, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 2, 1924, in Pittsburgh, son of the late Harry Jarvis and Mildred Martin Eldred.

Jarvis graduated from Morgantown High School in 1942. He and Don Knotts were well known for their entertainment with the Hi Y Club Minstrel throughout the Morgantown community. Don Knotts as a ventriloquist, Ritchie Ferrara on banjo and Jarvie on the musical saw were often a trio. He was blessed with an ear for music. A self-taught musician, he played piano, keyboard and the musical saw. He was a veteran of World War II in which he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war, Jarvis returned and became a skilled watchmaker and repairman and was affiliated with Robert Yagle Jewelry Store for seven years. Then the next 12 years of his life were spent as a mechanic in the area coal mines in Monongalia County. After leaving the mines, he entered the real estate field in which he constructed several apartment buildings in the Morgantown area. Jarvis was also a member of several civic organizations in Morgantown which include Lodge 4 A.F. & A.M. and was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Shriners. He also was a member of the VFW Post 548, a former member of the BPO Elk Lodge 411. Jarvis was affiliated with the Mount Morris Assembly of God Church in Mount Morris, Pa.

A devoted husband and loving father, he is survived by his wife, Kathleen McClure Eldred; three daughters and spouses, Karen Parson, of Maryland, Jenny and Dr. Neal Houslanger, of New York, and Judith and Kenneth Holland, of Arizona; a son, H. Jarvis Eldred III; 10 grandchildren, Michelle, Jennifer, Christina, Rebecca, Jarvis IV, Robert, Jessica, Zachary, Caleb and Crystal; a stepson and spouse, William and Regina McClure, of Mount Morris; and 10 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Alyssa, Mayloni, Kyana, Rashon, Jaylah, Dakota, Kayla, Jessie and H. Jarvis V.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Lemmon Eldred.

Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fred Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow in the East Oak Grove Cemetery. The Morgantown Masonic A.F. & F.M. Lodge 4 will hold a graveside service and Shriners will act as pallbearers.

Wilmer V. Morley

Wilmer V. Morley, 92, of Richwood Avenue, formerly of Riverview Drive, Morgantown, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 29, 1910, in Mona (Granville), a son of the late Larry T. and Nora Everly Morley.

He attended local schools in Grant District, Monongalia County, and graduated from University High School. He was a graduate of West Virginia University, with a bachelor of arts degree. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a captain in the U.S. Army in North Africa, Italy, and the 5th Army.

Wilmer was employed with Wood County Bank for two years before returning to Morgantown, where he was employed with the Farmers and Merchants Bank for over 40 years before retiring as Senior Vice President. He was a longtime member of Spruce Street United Methodist Church, a member of the Monongalia Lodge IOOF, Masonic Lodge 4, and former member of the Morgantown Rotary Club.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, a dear friend and caregiver, Anna Billie Avakian; a special niece, Georgia Anne Buettner; a cousin and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Helen Billie Morley, on Jan. 22, 1993.

Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2003, from 4-6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, from noon-3 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, from noon until time of funeral service at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Walter S. Hopkins Jr.

Walter S. Hopkins Jr., 74, of Morgantown, W.Va, passed away Monday, June 16, 2003, at Monongalia General Hospital.

He was born March 30, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, and grew up in Elizabeth, W.Va., a son of the late Walter S. Hopkins Sr. and Effie Collins.

Walter was a graduate of West Virginia University in 1951 where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, Mountain Honorary and former Student Body President. After graduation he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He has been a resident of Morgantown since 1947 and earned his living as an insurance agent with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. for 50 years. He served as State President of the Life Underwriters Association and earned CLU and ChFC designations. He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of Morgantown Rotary, and active in the Boy Scouts, where he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a former member of the Monongalia General Hospital Board of Directors and First National and Huntington Banks Board of Directors.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann Sutter Hopkins; three sons, Mike and Ruth Hopkins, of Morgantown, Mark and Barbara Hopkins, of Eleanor, W.Va., and Alan and Ronda Hopkins, of Fairmont, W.Va.; one daughter, Amy Hopkins McClung and Mike McClung, of Morgantown; one brother, Robert Gene Hopkins, of Waverly, Ohio; and two sisters, Margaret Fry, of Kannapolis, N.C., and Juanita Bird, of Centralia, Wash. He will also be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, Marcus Hopkins, of Knoxville, Tenn., Lindsey and Katie McClung, of Morgantown, and Daniel and Alyssa Hopkins, of Fairmont.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Wayne Hopkins.

Raymond V. Eye

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. – Raymond V. Eye, a native of West Virginia living in Sun City Center expired April 6, 2003, at his home in the Kings Point Section.

His second wife, Jo Anne Eye, preceded Mr. Eye of cancer in June 2002. Mr. Eye was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joane, and their daughter, Mary Deb, in 1956; and later by their son, Raymond Douglas Eye in 1983; and their other daughter, Carolyn Denise Knapp, in 1997.

Raymond Eye was a career employee of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and served as colonel of the Law Enforcement Division of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Later, he served as assistant to the director of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, a position he held until his retirement in 1986.

During his tenure as “chief law enforcement officer,” Col. Eye held a voluminous number of regional and national posts in conservation law enforcement and was the recipient of many honors and awards. He was appointed to the Coast Guard Advisory Board by President Reagan and was appointed to other boards and commissions by other presidents. He was honored as “Distinguished West Virginian” by Governor Arch A. Moore Jr. and received numerous awards and commendations from governors Underwood, Smith and Rockefeller.

Mr. Eye is survived by brothers, Rollie Eye of Fairmont, W.Va., Billy Eye of Elkins, W.Va., and their spouses; grandchildren, Matt Knapp and family of Atlanta, Ga., Amy Kotula and family of Charleston AFB, S.C., J.B. Knapp of Sarasota, Fla.; son-in-law, Glen Knapp of Sarasota; and three great-grandchildren, Abby and Jack Knapp of Atlanta, Danny Kotula of Charleston AFB.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Lewers Funeral Home, Ruskin, Fla. Interment will follow in Florida National Cemetery.

Ray A. Wilkins

Ray A. Wilkins, 84, of Morgantown, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his Florida home in Polk City.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Feb. 18, 1919, son of the late Frank H. and Leila Speakman Wilkins.

He was a graduate of Morgantown High School and West Virginia University, Class of 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he rose to the rank of Captain and served in the South Pacific with the 58th Service Group of the 5th Air Force. He retired from the Air Force Reserves in 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association.

Having been raised in the automobile business, he returned from the service in 1945 to manage Wilkins Motors, the Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep dealership in Morgantown. In 1957, along with his brother, he established JoReed Motors, selling Lincoln, Mercury and Edsel. He established Truck Equipment Warehouse in 1969, a successful regional parts distributor. He was a 60-year member of American Automobile Association, where he was a director for many years; a member of the Monongalia County New Car Dealers Association and of the West Virginia Automobile and Truck Dealers Association. He was a member of the Morgantown Rotary Club for 57 years where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and past president. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Osiris Shrine.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, of Morgantown, where he has held the positions of Trustee and Elder. He was a member of the building committee responsible for construction of the present church. As a boy, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Later, as an adult volunteer, he served 45 years in numerous capacities as well as district chairman and president of Mountaineer Area Council BSA and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a volunteer.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Walkup Wilkins; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray Andrew Wilkins II and Melody Wilkins, of Morgantown; a daughter and son-in-law, Audrey Wilkins Bertram and William C. Bertram, of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Ryan C. Bertram, of Athens, Ohio, and Kathryn M. Bertram, of Chicago, Ill.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Frank H. Wilkins Jr. and Martha Wilkins, of Morgantown.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 456 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Saturday, May 10. Harry Lawson McDonald

Harry Lawson McDonald, 89, of Woodland Drive, Bridgeport, died suddenly at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born Oct. 7, 1913, at Belington, a son of the late Frank and Doris Sturm McDonald. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Cooper McDonald, who died May 2, 2001.

He is survived by his daughter, Alexis McDonald, of Pinewood Avenue, Bridgeport and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Betty Zirkle and Mabel Hileman, both of Shinnston; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Dennis and Kenneth "Trapper" McDonald; two sisters, Maxine West and Margaret Cunningham.

Mr. McDonald graduated from Shinnston High School in 1932 and attended West Virginia University. A longtime businessman for over 45 years, he was owner and operator of Hawkins and Tread Service, Morgantown, and City Tire Service, Clarksburg.

His memberships included Morgantown Union Lodge 4, AF & AM, 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason, Wheeling Consistory, Knights Templar, Morgantown, Nemesis Temple, Parkersburg, Central West Virginia Shrine Club, Clarksburg, and Elks Lodge 482, Clarksburg. He wa s Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. A funeral service will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2003, with the Rev. Steven Dorsey officiating. Interment will follow at the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

Richard Lewis Ripley Sr.

Richard Lewis Ripley Sr., 69, of Smithtown Road, Morgantown, passed away with his family and friends at his side, on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Monongalia General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 4, 1933, in Washington, Pa., son of the late Craig Garland Ripley Sr. and Dorothy LaVaughn Peel Ripley.

Dick retired from Consol's Humphrey No. 7 mine, where he was maintenance foreman. He was affiliated with Morgantown Union Lodge No. 4 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Osiris Temple Shrine, Morgantown Shrine Club, Mountaineer Patrol, York Rite C hapter and Commandery, Knights Commander Court of Honor, K.C.C.H., secretary for the Lodge of Perfection. He was 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was affiliated with York Rite College, Knight Masons, The Royal Order of Scotland, Fairmont Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Research Society, Legion of Honor of Osiris Temple, Royal Order of Jesters in Wheeling, and Honorary DeMolay Legion of Honor. Richard also helped establish the Morgantown Childhood Language Center. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Grim Ripley; daughter, Dot Duffer; son and wife, Richard L. Ripley Jr. and Cindy Ripley; son and wife, Timothy Duane Ripley Sr. and Leyla Ripley; daughter and husband, Kathy and Mike Simpson; and 11 grandchildren, Tim Ripley and wife Megan, Christi Duffer, Mary Simpson, Steve Duffer III, Rachel Ripley, Tanya Ripley, Cassie Ripley, Mikey Simpson, Rick Ripley III, David Simpson and Aaron Simpson. He is also survived by a favorite uncle, Thurman Peel, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Joan Maynard, and brother Craig G. Ripley Jr.
